Eyes Wide Shut on Carbon Monoxide

I hate to start this eye-opening experience off with “I have been doing this for many years”. because there are contractors out there that use this as their badge of honor! I want to tell you it’s content not time. I have been in the Plumbing and Heating Industry since 1983 Licensed in 1987.

Training, Training, Training

Through the years that have followed I have received my Master Plumbing License. My Unrestricted Builders License. My Certified Remodelers Certificate through NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) I passed The CORE for the NATE (North American Technical Excellence) which was phase one of a multitude of classes I could be certified in.

Boiler Maintenance and Tuning

It is now with this amount of time and training that I did not know about or read about proper boiler tuning and maintenance. I recently attended a three-day training

and certification program put on by NCI (National Comfort Institute) The teacher and trainer Jim Davis with 31 years of hands on equipment maintenance and training has put together a library of technical data and troubleshooting diagnostic break down for most fossil burning gas appliances. This includes Boilers, water heaters, warm air furnaces, gas fire places and stoves. Natural and LP (Liquid Petroleum) fired appliances.

Carbon Monoxide Testing

As Jim spoke, I was amazed at the amount of information he had compiled over his 31 years dealing with Carbon Monoxide testing and equipment tuning. It was at this point that I started thinking of all the equipment I had installed over the years how I believed I gave the homeowner the best possible job I could give them! How could it be that I was just learning and hearing of something so important. How could I consider myself a complete mechanical contractor without this knowledge?

No Guess work just evidence

Jim opened my eyes to the diagnostic side of equipment maintenance showing us that there is no guessing just evidence. Evidence you can share with the homeowner so they can make an informed decision on what to do next. More importantly Jim’s classes focus on Carbon Monoxide gasses that are produced when equipment isn’t tuned and vented correctly and how this can affect the homeowner and their most prized possessions their children.

Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractor

My reason for writing this article is not a selfish one, I too am a homeowner and have four children living at home. If I believe in the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors (PHCC) Mission statement “The Plumber Protects the Health of the Nation” and I do. I felt it was duty to share this knowledge with the people I protect. If you’re a homeowner with a gas or oil-fired heating system in your home or office and you don’t know if it has ever been inspected by a certified Carbon Monoxide Technician you owe it to yourself and family. Not only will you save money on your heating bills you might even save the life of one of your loved one.
