To A/C or not to A/C

To A/C or not to A/C:

I could just die.

I remember as a young boy looking forward to summer (who didn’t) although for our summers we would go to Pennsylvania to visit all of our cousins. My mother and father were from Pa. and all of our extended family still lived in Pennsylvania. Oh the corn fields, the night stars and the heat!! Summers in Pennsylvania were so hot on our two week vacation to visit the family we would travel from family to family and stay for a few days in each house.

What a Difference a fan makes.

You get the floor.

There were never enough beds for everyone which meant there was a lot of floor sleeping. To me as a child it was great; it was like camping with my cousins and you could sleep anywhere there was floor space. We usually chose the lower floors due to the heat. It was great to finally get to Mom Mom’s house because she had this large floor stand old metal fan which stood in the corner and was never turned off.

The sweet sound of Air.

It’s my turn.

Oh to be in the same room as the almighty fan, you didn’t dare not sleep at the foot of this machine while the days heat tried to release itself from the house. As the fan turned from one side of the room to the next as you waited patiently for it to return facing in your direction. Like magic the morning finally came and the past days heat was gone for now when we didn’t need the fan for it’s life saving breeze we took turns singing into the housing of blades.

How did we get by?

It must be age.

Somehow we made it through those hot summers in Pennsylvania, we grew up without A/C or room air conditioners and it seemed normal. Like most adults I speak to today the story’s the same. Then in the next breath we ask what did we ever do before A/C how did we survive? We all agree it must have something to do with our age. We were kids, we didn’t have to get up. It was summertime we had no responsibilities. Or is it something else? Is there more Air Conditioning today?

How Much Money?

That can’t be right!

Is there more Air Conditioning yes of course. It’s a modern convenience. It’s a necessity! Houses today are not built with eliminating heat from the house like so many in the south. High ceilings and bigger windows. Cross ventilation and large roofed outdoor areas to escape the inside. We live in New England and a house like that would not work in the winter months. Are house doesn’t have Air Conditioning we would like to get an estimate for that. How much? That can’t be right.

To Sleep like a king!

For two months.

A year’s worth of savings to sleep like a king for two months, are we crazy? The answer is yes and brilliant at the same time. Heat can drive your family crazy and if you don’t do something about it you’ll go crazy. We already have ductwork in our house! Can we get Air Conditioning? Yes and no? What, I have the money! Yes, but you live in a house that was built from the late 40’s to the late 60’s and your ductwork was sized for only warm air?

What to do?

This can only happen to me.

As a cooling contractor this is one of the worst situations you can be faced with. The homeowner believes they are halfway there when in reality they are as far away as a homeowner with a forced hot water heating system. Air Conditioning ductwork is twice as large as heating ductwork because cold air is denser than hot. As well with these systems the thermostat is usually on the first floor and the bedrooms are on the second floor? This is a recipe for disaster. If you want to make a homeowner so mad they want to hurt you physically sell them an A/C system which in the height of summer will not cool their second floor where they sleep.

The 80/ 20 rule…

I already have a system.

We can do it another way, how about a split ductless system? Or a small duct high velocity system? We can add A/C to your existing system although you will have to live with the 80/ 20 rule? What? Yes. 80% of the time you might be comfortable but 20% of the time you won’t. Most of these estimates end in the two parties saying goodbye with the homeowner shaking their head and me wondering how I got to be the bad guy? I didn’t install the original heating system.

I mentioned I have been in the Plumbing and heating industry for over 35 years although I have only been in the Air Conditioning service Industry for just about 10 years. I still have a hard time dealing with the reaction of homeowners who have lost their A/C. The biggest reaction I get is the phone hanging up on me. The answer to this homeowners problem is not being dealt with in a timely manner! I don’t believe you heard me, we don’t have Air conditioning!!! If I have to go one more night without it my wife is going to kill me or worse I’m going to kill someone.

I never understood this title?

The heat makes us crazy. You can’t escape it; it’s everywhere. I can’t think. The humidity is so oppressive I want to run naked through the streets. Ok maybe that’s going a bit too far.. or is it. It’s the top story on the evening news. The summer heat wave has got hold of us now and there is no end in sight. As a cooling technician the summer A/C season is hard on me. I think we’re in it for the long haul. With houses growing bigger and bigger the need for heating and cooling them has gotten more demanding. After the past 10 years I have found that more and more of my clientele will wait for my services knowing I will work through my busy season and get to them in a timely manner even if it’s working through the night and weekends.
